When a Drone becomes an Aeroplane !
It was always my intention to see what our Orphanage of Hope and our Hope Education School looks like from the air. Uganda; particularly in this region which is very attractive , with many banana trees and terraced hills full of crops. Land that is not covered in green is often a very deep brown colour which is land that has been dug over by hand and is about to be planted in one of the wet seasons. It is very very productive land , the women who do most of the digging , wee

LIFE IS LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES
A lot is happening at the moment on two fronts....obviously the Ebola outbreak is of major concern as one of the borders with the DRC is only 70 kms away. People are still able to illegally enter Uganda.... sadly the border isn't a impenetrable fence ....There was talk of schools closing but thankfully the Parliament refused to agree to it ....for the time being anyway. The second issue is that three young children were murdered at a United States created school in the North

The Great Wall and the Amazing Walkers !
I am sure when you look at the photograph leading my latest blog of 8 men ( one slightly obscured) you will probably be thinking what are these men doing with these white sacks on their heads. Maybe you assume they are lifting them off a truck...but I will give you a clue ....Petrol has run out in Kabale .....so everyone needs to walk. For our regular readers you will recall during the Covid Pandemic our crops at Lake Bunyonyi had to be carried on foot...or more precisel

More Good News.
I promised in my last blog that I would be posting a follow up one with some good news ...and here it is. For quite some time our orphaned children have had to make do with substandard footware or in some cases no footware . With the continued generosity of our wonderful Lanie all 172 children have robust new shoes , to which they are very very grateful. Often such acts of kindness are met with little emotion by children in well to do countries , often expecting to receive s

Building A Wall .....
This is not any garden wall ...this is a security wall that will cover over two hectares ....not because we want to build it for its astetic beauty , but because of necessity. Before putting equipment into our newly built Brian Sloan Skills Training Centre, we wanted to review options . Maybe putting several more security men and extra dogs ...maybe putting increased lighting ....but we had to have something in place to stop thieves from entering the school , ( which they d

THE JOY OF SAVING A LIFE (2)
The saving a life can never be measured in qualifiable terms when you know deep down in your heart it must be done regardless of the cost. At our Orphanage of Hope we have three children all with HIV /AIDS who must have a complete blood transfusion every 2 to three years. This is a drawn out, painful and expensive ( from a Ugandan prospective) operation and can only be carried out in the capital Kampala in their major hospital. Getting there requires a 10 hour public bus rid

2025 WAS A HUGE YEAR!!!
Be prepared to be amazed! In the 12 months from 01 January 2025 to 31 December 2025 $282,820.77 New Zealand Dollars was sent to the Orphanage of Hope & Education Centre. (our school) Every Dollar that was donated was sent to the OOH and this is just a summary of what was achieved in addition to the 50 plus items that are paid for to support the 172 orphans each month. We are so grateful to the wonderful ( but tiny) donation base that keeps these children alive. We can neve

A BIG THANK YOU!!!
With less than a week to Christmas Day and about the same amount of time before we usher in 2026.....it is a good time to reflect on the amazing progress that was achieved in 2025. Whilst events of a world in turmoil occupied a lot of peoples minds, we were able to achieve so much in a quiet orderly way, as can be seen by reading previous blogs. We wish to thank our small band of faithful supporters ...those who give on a regular basis ; those who give a little when they can

Great News…
Very happy to report that despite inclement weather , the Brian Sloan Skills Training Centre is now completed! We believe this will be a game changer and will be the start of not only giving every orphan the best education under the Ugandan Government Education System but also practical skills in what will be useful in their adult life. In one of the two skills training rooms will be maybe 12 to 15 sewing machines. We will source these from within Uganda (Kampala the capital
